Whitney Point, NY – You can find the final results listing the Major Winners of the 2010 Running of the Almost-Annual New York State Crappie Derby at the following website link. http://www.crappiederby.com/winners2010.htm. The event is conducted by the Whitney Point Sportsmens Association and the Broome County Department of Parks and Recreation. You should be able to “cut and paste” any data that you need from this link. If you need any additional data, please contact me by Email of phone. The map will give you a snapshot of attendance from your area. Too numerous to list were the many prizes given to our young visitors. We had a lot of fun putting this event on and hope that our participants also did.
The day started out cool at 11 degrees and slowly inched up to the mid 20’s. The breeze was calm until mid morning when it came up to the low 10’s but frequently let up. It was a comfortable day. We had the National Weather Service there with a live, digital weather station and to answer many questions from our participants. The Ross Park Zoo brought a number of small critters for us to touch and get to know. The Finch Hollow Conservation Center had displays which helped our attendees in identifying fish species along with other displays. And it wasn’t just the kids who were enjoying these exhibits. Gander Mountain had all of the latest electronics gadgets and had professional fishermen on hand to instruct the youngsters and improve their techniques. Broome County Parks and Broome County Security were there to help in so many ways. Parking was more than adequate and the staff at Dorchester Park showed our guests every courtesy. We are indebted to all who assisted us in this endeavor. Everyone won on this day.
The approximate purse was over $14,500 and the prizes were distributed so that everyone had an opportunity to win something even without catching a fish. WPSA representatives roamed the iced all day looking for kids to give a prize to.
Final registration was 1,339 including participants from 34 of the 62 NYS Counties and 6 states other than NY along with 3 visitors from Canada. Those 12 years and under made up 196 of the 1,339 registrants. This is up a full percent. Registration was down partly due to the postponement of the event and the fact that it was Valentine’s Day weekend. We also believe that the increased size of the lake this year encouraged our participants to be much more widely dispersed across the lake making the distance further to register.
As we have done in the past, half of the Registration Fee will be placed back into our community and the remainder will be used to help offset the cost of conducting the event.
We would like to thank the media for helping us get the word out on this event and hope to make it happen again next year.
